Since the early periods of codification, Islamic sciences have witnessed a deep epistemological interaction among their various fields, particularly between the Sharia and linguistics. This study falls within this interdisciplinary framework, aiming to explore the ways in which Islamic legal knowledge—especially the science of Usul al-Fiqh (Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence)—has contributed to enriching the field of linguistics by analyzing the aspects of integration between Usul al-Fiqh and Usul al-Nahw (Principles of Grammar).
The central issue of this study lies in questioning the nature of the relationship between these two fields: Is it merely a superficial borrowing of terminology, or has it gone beyond that to a cognitive and methodological integration that enriched the grammatical system and contributed to the development of its analytical and inferential tools?
The primary objective is to uncover the shared conceptual structure and the mutual methodological mechanisms that point to a deeper epistemological unity beyond mere terminological similarity.
Methodologically, the study adopts the descriptive method as its primary analytical framework, focusing on the systematic description of conceptual and methodological phenomena within both Uṣūl al-Naḥw and Uṣūl al-Fiqh as presented in authoritative classical texts. Within this descriptive framework, analysis is employed as an operational tool to examine the phenomena under investigation through the deconstruction of the shared terminology between the two disciplines. Particular attention is given to qiyās (analogical reasoning) as a mechanism for relating subsidiary cases to foundational principles, taʿlīl (causal reasoning) as a principle for explaining the construction of rules and linking them to their underlying causes, and istidlāl (inferential reasoning) as a method of argumentation and proof for establishing rules and judgments in both fields. The study also utilizes the comparative method to examine Uṣūl al-Naḥw alongside Uṣūl al-Fiqh, with the aim of identifying similarities and differences in their epistemological foundations and mechanisms for rule formation, while drawing on an interdisciplinary approach to situate this comparison within its broader intellectual context.
As an applied model, the study focuses on the concept of “al-aṣl” (the foundational principle) in Uṣūl al-Fiqh, considered here as the methodological counterpart of the grammatical “aṣl” in the construction of linguistic rules. This concept is analyzed in order to elucidate its influence on the formation of grammatical thought and the direction of its inferential processes, particularly in relation to the mechanisms of analogical reasoning and the extension of subsidiary cases to foundational principles.
The study concludes that engaging the classical scholarly heritage through an integrative epistemological perspective constitutes a fundamental condition for the renewal and deepening of linguistic studies, by recognizing the logic of methodological integration that characterized the Islamic sciences throughout their historical development.
