In the modern era, the Prophetic Sunnah has been increasingly subjected to waves of doubt, criticism, and interpretive contestation. While some of these challenges emerge from Orientalist and secular intellectual trends, others arise from internal methodological shortcomings related to the understanding of Islamic texts. Among the most significant contemporary issues in this regard is the decline in linguistic competence among certain learners and readers, including both members of the general Muslim public and some contemporary researchers. Such linguistic deficiency often leads to partial or erroneous interpretations of Prophetic traditions, resulting in inaccurate understandings of their meanings, contexts, and intended legal or ethical implications.
This study aims to examine the relationship between linguistic weakness and the misinterpretation of the Prophetic Sunnah by analysing the ways in which insufficient linguistic competence affects the understanding of Hadith texts. The study adopts an analytical and descriptive approach, supported by a comparative examination of selected examples in which linguistic misunderstanding has led to problematic interpretations of Prophetic traditions.
The findings of the study indicate that linguistic deficiency—particularly in areas such as semantics, syntax, rhetorical expression, and contextual interpretation—plays a significant role in generating interpretive errors and in reinforcing contemporary scepticism toward certain Hadith texts. The study further demonstrates that many interpretive disputes surrounding Prophetic traditions are closely linked to inadequate engagement with the linguistic and contextual dimensions of the Arabic language in which these texts were originally articulated.
In light of these findings, the study recmmends the integration of specialised linguistic training within Islamic studies programmes, particularly in the areas of semantics, contextual analysis, and rhetorical structures of Arabic. It also emphasises the importance of reforming Arabic language curricula so that they are taught as a methodological tool for understanding the Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah. In addition, the study calls for the development of applied training programmes that combine Arabic linguistic competence with methodological skills in Hadith interpretation. Finally, it encourages further interdisciplinary research examining real cases of Hadith misinterpretation resulting from linguistic weakness in order to strengthen sound scholarly engagement with the Prophetic tradition.
